Respect

Attacking the person makes the complaint bigger and the solution smaller.

What to do instead

Pick one phrase or gesture you use when annoyed and replace it with a description plus a request. Instead of ‘You never think,’ try ‘We agreed on this expense together; I want us to discuss the next one before buying.’ If you make a jab, correct it directly: ‘That was insulting. Let me say what I actually need.’ Do not attach ‘but you started it’ to the repair. Over the next week, notice whether you can stay specific when frustrated. Directness can be useful. Cruelty does not become useful because you deliver it confidently.

Appreciation & Gratitude

What to do instead

Choose one recent moment when you felt overlooked and identify what would actually have helped: recognition, practical support, or a fairer arrangement. Then communicate that need without dismissing your partner's effort. For example: 'I appreciate how much you're doing. When I finished the appointment arrangements, I needed you to notice that work.' Or: 'Thank you for saying you appreciate me. What would help tonight is sharing the cleanup so I can rest.' Ask how that situation felt to your partner, too. You're trying to make the need understandable, not prove that one of you does everything.
